The Twin Arches and Research Parkway
An Iconic Gateway into Downtown Winston-Salem
The Twin Arches rise over the interchange of US 52 and Research Parkway. The iconic gateway into downtown Winston-Salem is a collaborative project between the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the City of Winston-Salem, and the Creative Corridors Coalition. At night the arches are illuminated by LED lighting fixtures that have the ability to change color. Requests can be made to the city to change the color of the lights for special events. Creative Corridors Coalition commissioned world-renowned bridge architect Donald MacDonald to design the arches. MacDonald’s design—now referred to as the Twin Arches—takes visual cues from the frequently found arches in our Moravian communities and the domed building, currently called the Wells Fargo Center, designed by renowned architect César Pelli.
Creative Corridors Coalition also worked on and subsidized many of the new Research Parkway's betterments leading to the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter including brickwork and landscaping.
