Green Street Pedestrian Bridge

An Iconic and Artful Gateway in Winston-Salem

In 2021 Roads & Bridges magazine named the Green Street Pedestrian Bridge the No. 2-ranked bridge in North America. Donald MacDonald, the designer for this bridge and the Twin Arches, drew his inspiration from the arching form of the oak trees seen throughout the local landscape. MacDonald has won numerous international, national, and regional awards for his bridge designs. The bridge has a pair of inner arches that are 32 feet tall, incline outward, and support most of the bridge’s weight. A lower pair of 16- foot outer arches flank the inner arches and carry part of the load. The Green Street pedestrian bridge connects the West Salem neighborhood (southside) with Truist Stadium and other north-side destinations. It is common to see families using this bridge to walk to the ballpark, runners getting exercise and locals riding bicycles for fun or to get to work. The Green Street Bridge will provide a vital north/south connection to a planned bicycle and pedestrian path that is slated to go from Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Hospital into downtown Winton Salem.
