Salem Parkway Betterments

We cannot take for granted the betterments that will be included throughout the downtown corridor because of our collective efforts.

Betterments along Salem Parkway, previously known as Business 40, include the replacement of street lights, landscaping, railings, and various other aesthetic improvements along the highway through downtown Winston-Salem. These improvements represent enhancements above and beyond the standard improvements that were scheduled as part of the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s two-year project rebuilding this stretch of highway. Betterments improve the overall experience of moving through the corridor—whether by foot, bike, or car—and they represent a new standard for infrastructure improvements for our city and the State of North Carolina. The project has received national attention, not only for its great design but also because of the unique collaboration between the state department of transportation and a community-based nonprofit which brought vision and funding to these enhancements.
